1. Purpose

This policy outlines Rosehill College’s approach to supporting students in developing Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) skills necessary for their courses and future careers. The goal is to identify LLN needs and provide appropriate support to enhance learning outcomes and ensure successful participation in vocational education and training.


2. Commitment to LLN Development

  • Supporting LLN Skills: Rosehill College is committed to helping students develop the LLN skills necessary for academic success and career readiness.
  • Core Skills: LLN skills include the ability to effectively understand and use language, interpret and communicate in various contexts, and apply numeracy skills in practical situations.

3. Identification of LLN Needs

  • Assessment: Conduct LLN assessments during the enrolment process or at the beginning of each course. This helps to identify any specific LLN needs that students may have.
  • Tools: Use appropriate LLN assessment tools that are relevant to the content of the course and its vocational requirements.
  • Ongoing Assessment: Continuously assess LLN skills throughout the course to identify emerging needs and adapt support strategies accordingly.

4. Provision of LLN Support

  • Support Plans: Based on the assessment results, develop and implement tailored LLN support plans for students with identified needs.
  • Resources: Provide access to LLN resources such as tutoring services, learning aids, and online tools. These resources aim to assist students in improving their LLN skills.
  • Referrals: If additional assistance is required beyond the college’s capabilities, refer students to external LLN support services for further support.

5. Integration of LLN into Courses

  • Training for Staff: Provide training for trainers and assessors to help them integrate LLN skills into their teaching and assessment practices. This ensures that LLN needs are addressed effectively within the learning environment.
  • Course Materials and Assessments: Incorporate LLN skills into course delivery and assessments to enhance the overall learning experience. Modify learning materials and assessment methods to accommodate students with identified LLN needs.

6. Monitoring and Review

  • Regular Monitoring: Monitor the effectiveness of LLN support through regular feedback from students and assessment results. Adjust support strategies based on the outcomes of this monitoring.
  • Annual Review: Conduct an annual review of the LLN policy and support strategies. Use feedback and emerging best practices to update the policy and procedures, ensuring they remain effective and relevant.

7. Responsibilities

  • Academic Manager:
    • Oversee the implementation of the LLN policy.
    • Ensure the effective provision of LLN support.
    • Lead the monitoring and review processes for the LLN policy.
  • Trainers and Assessors:
    • Identify LLN needs through assessments and observations.
    • Provide appropriate LLN support within their teaching and assessment practices.
  • Administration and Student Support Officers:
    • Conduct initial and ongoing LLN assessments.
    • Coordinate the provision of LLN support services and resources.
